Woman with Book and Striped Dress

Every detail, such as the small booties and pearl necklace, was worked with precision, giving the sculpture a decorative and evocative character that celebrates the power of written words and imagination by evoking strength and introspection.

The technique used to color “Woman with Book” is engobe, an ancient technique known since the 3rd millennium B.C. Engobe is a coating made from clay and water. On woman with book, engobe colors were applied by brush to red clay, carefully layering them to achieve an even shade. The dress and boots were painted black, the necklace and book pages white, and the cover light blue. With care and meticulousness, the sgraffito technique was used to create subtle stripes on the dress. All the elements and small details were carefully painted, making use of fine brushes to enhance each detail.

In the sculpture “Woman with Book,” the natural color of the terracotta stands out in the ungobed parts, revealing the original hue of the earth with which it was molded. A light layer of wax was applied to the painted parts, giving a matte satin effect that lends additional sophistication to the figure.

“Woman with Book” is a unique work, signed like all CHX ceramics.
